Guide · Staying safe

Spotting job scams.

The warning signs of a fake job advert, what a real employer will never ask for, and where to report a scam.

Most job adverts are exactly what they say. A few aren’t, and they tend to look alike. We check every advert on UB1UB2 Jobs before it goes up, but it’s worth knowing the signs wherever you look for work.

A real employer won’t

  • Ask you to pay for anything to get the job: training, a DBS check, a uniform, a starter kit or a “registration fee”.
  • Ask for your bank details, or copies of your passport, before they’ve offered you a job.
  • Ask you to receive money into your account and pass it on. That’s money laundering, and it’s a crime even if you didn’t know.
  • Only talk on Telegram or WhatsApp, with no business name, address or website.

Be careful when

  • The pay is far above other jobs like it, for very little work.
  • You’re offered the job without any interview or questions.
  • They rush you to decide or pay today.

If something feels wrong

Stop, and don’t send money or documents. On UB1UB2 Jobs, tap Report this job on the advert and we’ll look at it the same day. You can report fraud to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at actionfraud.police.uk. If you’ve paid money, call your bank straight away.
